Week 9: Tank Girl

Tank Girl

I personally love Tank Girl! I was first introduced to her through her film starring Lori Petty, since then
I dyed a strip of my hair pink and fell in love with the comic’s art style, especially the renderings of
Brett Parson. Tank Girl is a feminist icon. She wears what she wants, does what she wants, and
does whoever she wants.

I think Tank Girl’s journey is still reflective of what youth deals with today. With so many different
ideologies fighting for power (in this case, fighting for who is ‘right’ about the end of the world) it can
be easy to lose your way. Tank Girl is constantly bombarded with everyone else’s craziness, and has
their beliefs thrust upon her. She’s uninterested in it all, even at times when she probably should be a
little interested, and simply seeks peace and quiet.

It seems the characters fall into two categories- conformists and nonconformists. Conformists consist
of corporatists and religious fanatics who obsess over their ideologies and the end of the world.
Nonconformists include mutants and hippie/punk people who are only interested in the pursuit of
Earthly pleasures (pizza, drinking, etc.). It seems a healthy person should exist somewhere in
between these stereotypes.
